Skyrim's Most Expensive Potions

Skyrim’s Most Expensive Potions

Latest posts by Arthur Monteclar (see all)

Skyrim is a game that allows you to have freedom in an open world. Do you want to smash the skulls of some spooky undead skeletons? Do you want to fire an arrow at an enemy’s knee? Or maybe you just want to fulfill the desire that you can only achieve in a fantasy world: buy an affordable house and settle down? Skyrim can let you do all that and more.

However, this freedom is restricted to a degree. Everything is not free, even in this magical setting. Maybe you saw an attractive weapon that would fit just right on a skull, or perhaps the perfect arrows to penetrate a knee, yet you do not have the money. Thankfully, gamers are a creative bunch, and we have found a way to circumnavigate this problem.

Players have come up with a ton of solutions, and one way to make a lot of dough quickly is by selling potions. They are easy to make and more valuable than the ingredients for the potion. Why sell a Giant’s Toe for 20 gold and Wheat for five gold when you can combine the two to sell it for a whole lot more? This guide will help you find the best and most expensive potions you can sell in Skyrim.

Bottom Line Up Front

The best potions to sell that are worth a lot of money are:

Potion of Waterbreathing

    • Garlic + Nordic Barnacle + Salmon Roe
    • Chicken’s Egg + Hawk’s Egg + Salmon Roe
    • Nightshade + (Chicken’s Egg or Hawk’s Egg) + Salmon Roe
    • Bear Claws + (Chicken’s Egg or Hawk’s Egg) + Salmon Roe
    • Butterfly Wing + (Chicken’s Egg or Hawk’s Egg) + Salmon Roe

Potion of Fortify Stamina

    • Boar Tusk + Large Antlers + (Wheat, Giant’s Toe, or Yellow Mountain Flower)
    • Boar Tusk + Yellow Mountain Flower + (Slaughter Egg or Garlic)
    • Boar Tusk + Blue Mountain Flower + Lavander
    • Boar Tusk + Bear Claws + (Torchbug Thorax or Large Antlers)

Poison of Damage Health

  • Burnt Spriggan Wood + Jarrin Root + River Betty

What Are Potions in Skyrim?

Potions are items you can find, create, and drink in Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. They are usually stored in bottles of varying shapes, colors, and sizes, but they all weigh 0.5 points in the Dragonborn’s storage. They also have varying effects when you drink one. Some potions are useful to the user, like fortifying their strength, stamina regeneration, and the like.

However, some of them are harmful. These harmful potions are known as poisons, and there is a variety of them, such as poisons that can damage health, magic regeneration, stamina regeneration, and more. Unique and non-leveled potions also exist, and they cannot be created. NPCs usually give these potions out to the player to fulfill a quest. Finally, some potions are drugs.

What Are the Most Expensive Potions in Skyrim?

You can create potions and sell them to make a lot of money in Skyrim. However, the potions’ worth differs depending on certain effects like the creator’s alchemy skill level, alchemist perks, and more. So, there may be times that a certain potion made by someone with high alchemy skills and fantastic perks is more expensive than someone’s potion with little to no alchemy skills.

For clarity’s sake, I based these potions’ worth on the following factors:

  • Alchemy Skill: 10
  • Fortify Alchemy: 0
  • Alchemist Perk: 0
  • Physician: No
  • Benefactor: No
  • Poisoner: No
  • Purity No

I will note the value based on these factors as the “minimum value” since they are pretty much the statistics of a new player. However, I will also note down a “maximum value without purity” wherein the following factors are in place:

  • Alchemy Skill: 100
  • Fortify Alchemy: 33
  • Alchemist Perk: 100
  • Physician: Yes
  • Benefactor: Yes
  • Poisoner: Yes
  • Purity: No

Note that Fortify Alchemy is only at 33 because, according to some sources, the maximum percentage for the Fortify Alchemy effect that can be possible in the game without using any cheats or commands is 33%. Furthermore, the Purity perk can sometimes lower a potion’s value, so I assume that the player does not have it.

Still, if your character has already maxed out everything in the Alchemy skill tree, including the Purity perk, then I will also be noting it down as “maximum value with purity” because I am a considerate person who thinks of gamers that have spent too much time in this game. Finally, I sorted this list from the most valuable potions to the least in terms of minimum value.

List of Most Expensive Potions in Skyrim

A lot more valuable potions exist (especially Potions of Waterbreathing) that are not on this list. However, I had to keep the list concise and diverse. You can see different yet common ingredients in this list so that you can find something you can make with. For example, if you have a lot of yellow mountain flowers with you, then this list has potions that you can make using them.

Where to Find the Ingredients for Potions in Skyrim

You may use a lot of ingredients when creating everything in this list. There is too much that I can write in a single article on how to find them, so I will only be listing some of them if you are having a hard time looking for them.

Where to Find Bear Claws in Skyrim

You use Bear Claws in making the following potions in this list:

  • Potion of Waterbreathing (4)
  • Potion of Fortify Stamina (10)
  • Poison of Damage Magicka Regen (20)

You can harvest this ingredient from the dead bodies of bears, so be prepared to fight a strong and ferocious one. You can find bears in the following areas:

  • Fallowstone Cave, The Rift
  • Moss Mother Cavern, Falkreath Hold
  • Brood Cavern, Hjaalmarch
  • Pine Forest, Falkreath Hold and Whiterun

You can also get Bear Claws from snow bears found in the northern snowy parts of Skyrim, such as areas near The Pale and Winterhold. However, snow bears are stronger than cave bears, so if you are fighting bears to gather Bear Claws, it is best to stick with fighting cave bears (unless you want a challenge).

Where to find Beehive Husk in Skyrim

You use Beehive Husks in making the following potions in this list:

  • Poison of Damage Health (14)

You can collect Beehive Husks from various sources, but its main source is beehives. You can find beehives hanging from the trees throughout Skyrim. You can reach some of them easily, but there are instances where you have to make them drop. You can attack it to make it drop, such as using destruction magic or shouts. You can find beehives in the following areas:

  • Bannermist Tower, Falkreath Hold
  • Hill south from Halted Stream Camp, Whiterun Hold
  • Halldir’s Cairn, Falkreath Hold
  • Honeystrand Cave, The Rift
  • On a pole to the right of Hunter’s Rest’s entrance, Falkreath Hold
  • Southeast of Guardian Stones, Falkreath Hold
  • Southeast of Ilinalta’s Deep, Falkreath Hold
  • Under the end of the Riverwood’s northern bridge, Whiterun Hold
  • Hanging on a tree in a Bandit Camp on Helgen Cliffs, Falkreath Hold
  • Fisherman’s Island in Lake Ilinalta, Falkreath Hold
  • Above Twilight Sepulcher’s entrance, Falkreath Hold
  • Inside the Greenhouse of The Elder Scrolls V: Hearthfire’s manor
  • South of Kynesgrove, Eastmarch
  • South of the chest near Bard’s Leap Summit’s diving spot, The Reach
  • North of Lost Knife Hideout’s entrance, Eastmarch
  • Near the pond west of Stony Creek Cave, Eastmarch
  • On a hill near Bleakwind Basin, Whiterun

More locations for Beehive Husks exist, but the ones noted here are the most prominent ones. Alchemy merchants also sell them occasionally, so be on the lookout for them. Lastly, they may also appear in apothecary’s satchels.

Where to Find Blisterwort in Skyrim

You use Blisterworts in making the following potions in this list:

  • Poison of Damage Health (11)

Blisterworts are common ingredients you can find in the wild or in stores. Alchemy merchants usually sell multiple stocks of the ingredient, including Arcadia’s Cauldron in Whiterun. Also, completing the quest, “Salt for Arcadia” grants you the freedom to take two samples of Blisterworts regularly without it being counted as stealing. In the wild, you can find them in caves, like:

  • Blackreach, Winterhold and The Pale
  • Chillwind Depths, The Reach
  • Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary, Falkreath Hold
  • Darklight Tower, The Rift
  • Dead Drop Falls, The Rift
  • Druadach Redoubt, The Reach

FAQs

Question: Which potions in Skyrim are worth the most money?

Answer: The potions worth the most money are typically the Potions of Waterbreathing, especially the ones made from Garlic, Salmon Roe, and Nordic Barnacle.

Question: Which potions in Skyrim have the highest value?

Answer: A potion’s value depends on a lot of factors, such as your alchemy skills, perks, and more. Even your speech skill is important when selling them. So, the highest value depends on your character. Still, the usual high-valued potions are Potions of Waterbreathing.

Question: What are the most expensive potions for leveling in Skyrim?

Answer: Brewing expensive potions to make money will level up your alchemy skills. Then, selling them to a merchant (it is best to sell them to Alchemy shops such as Arcadia’s Cauldron) will level up your speech skills.

Conclusion: What are the best potions in Skyrim to make money?

Potion of Waterbreathing made from Garlic, Salmon Roe, and Nordic Barnacle are the best options to make a lot of money in a quick manner. You can find Garlic pretty easily inside the NPC’s houses and kitchens. Salmon Roe is also pretty common in Skyrim as well as Nordic Barnacle. Thus, making them would not be difficult at all.

If you do not have these ingredients, you can still brew a Potion of Waterbreathing using different ones. For example, you can make the second most expensive Potion of Waterbreathing using Chicken’s Egg, Hawk’s Egg, and Salmon Roe. Note that Salmon Roe is the most important ingredient in making these kinds of potions.

If you are scarce on Salmon Roe, then I would recommend making potions of the following ingredients: Boar Tusk, Large Antlers, Wheat, Giant’s Toe, or Yellow Mountain Flower. There is a ton of flexibility in brewing this potion. If you do not have Wheat, you can replace it with Giant’s Toe or a Yellow Mountain Flower, and it will still garner the same results.
